## What the role is about
CommerceClarity builds AI agents that run catalog operations for enterprise retailers. The agents are the product. This role builds what they run on.
You own the infrastructure under the platform: the execution and orchestration layer where workflows run, the data layer under millions of SKUs, the APIs, the deploys, and the observability that tells us when an agent is slow, wrong or expensive.
You need to have worked around AI systems, because what you are running is agents and the failure modes are different from a normal backend. But the depth we are hiring for is infrastructure and code, not prompting.
You would be the engineer who makes the platform hold as volume grows, working directly with the CPO and the tech lead.
The seat is hybrid. Base yourself in Milan, in Barcelona, or anywhere in the EU and travel to one of the two offices once a month.
## What you would do
- Own the orchestration and execution layer where agent workflows run, and make it reliable: retries, queues, idempotency, backpressure, isolation between customers.
- Build the data layer for high-volume catalog work: millions of SKUs, many languages, many channels, and the throughput to process them without falling over.
- Push the platform towards API-first, so every capability is callable and nothing lives only in a screen.
- Build the observability across the agent stack: traces, LLM cost and token usage, latency, quality signals, alerting that fires before the customer notices.
- Own infrastructure as code, CI/CD, environments, secrets, and the security bar.
- Build and own the integration layer with retailer systems: PIM, ERP, ecommerce platforms, marketplaces, data warehouses.
- Take a prototype the team built in a week and turn it into something that holds under enterprise load.
- Be on the hook for production. You debug it, you fix it, you make sure it does not come back.
## Who you are
### Essential
- Five or more years building backend and infrastructure in production, with systems you actually owned.
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals: queues, async processing, concurrency, failure handling, data consistency.
- You have run data pipelines at real volume and know where they break.
- Infrastructure as code, CI/CD, containers, monitoring and alerting are daily tools, not something you read about.
- Hands-on with LLM systems in production, even if you did not write the prompts. You understand cost, latency, rate limits, non-determinism and how to instrument them.
- Strong in at least one backend language, and willing to work in the stack we have rather than the one you prefer.
- You work fast with AI coding tools and you have opinions about where they help and where they lie.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and with a spec that arrives as a conversation.
- Low ego, high standards, direct in writing.
- Based in the EU, able to travel to Milan or Barcelona once a month.
- Fluent English.
### Preferred
- Workflow orchestration engines, Windmill, Temporal, Airflow, n8n or similar.
- Laravel or PHP, React and MongoDB, which is what the platform runs on today.
- LLM observability and eval plumbing: Langfuse, LangSmith or equivalent.
- You have built multi-tenant B2B infrastructure for enterprise customers.
- Ecommerce, retail, PIM or catalog data.
- You have been early at a startup and remember what that costs.
## The team you would join
Our founders have spent their careers building and operating retail at scale. They have founded retail companies generating tens of millions in revenue, launched and scaled Amazon operations in Italy and Spain, led operations at Everli across more than 2,000 employees, and shaped product direction at Shopify and Zalando. Operator, founder, product leader. Every seat that defined modern European commerce.
## Why join us
The agents only work if what runs them works. You own that layer, with production traffic from named enterprise retailers on it from the first week, on a team small enough that what you decide is in the product within days.
### What we offer
- Meaningful early-stage equity.
- Competitive salary.
- Hybrid. Anywhere in the EU, with monthly travel to Milan or Barcelona.
- The infrastructure layer of an AI-native platform to own outright, at the point where it is being built.
- Founders who have built architectures serving more than 25 million users.
- Agents that go live with named enterprise retailers, on tight feedback loops.
**Is open:** yes
**Footnote:** CommerceClarity is an equal opportunity employer. We hire on what you can do and how you work with people.
