What the role is about

Every retailer on earth is drowning in product data. Catalogs with tens of thousands of SKUs, half the attributes missing, different rules per marketplace, and agents starting to mediate what a consumer sees and buys. Most teams cope with spreadsheets, copy-paste, and catalog managers who burn out.

CommerceClarity builds AI agents for retail operations. Our agents take the catalog work teams run by hand today and own it end to end, using AI at the exact moments where judgment is needed.

As Retail Engineer you take those agents and make them work inside each customer’s environment. You partner with the retailer to understand their catalog operations, define the KPIs that count as success, design the agent setup, build the workflows and the prompts, integrate with their systems, and own the run. Half retail consultant, half engineer, fully accountable for the outcome, on accounts in the UK.

This is a high-ownership seat. You own our most strategic accounts end to end and you set the delivery method the rest of the team runs on. We weigh attitude and the combination over years on paper: the sweet spot is three to six years, and the right builder energy beats seniority.

This is one of the first seats we are opening in the UK. You would work out of the London hub on UK accounts, with the platform and the delivery method already built behind you in Milan and Barcelona.

A job that did not exist three years ago

New tools tend to produce job titles that were not there a few years earlier. Growth engineer and marketing engineer both appeared once the people who understood the funnel could write the code that ran it, and forward deployed engineer appeared when the same thing happened to enterprise delivery. None of the three was a rename. They exist because splitting the person who understands the process from the person who builds it stopped paying for itself.

Retail Engineer is that title for catalog operations. Most of the people who fit it have spent five or six years in solution consulting or business consulting at a retail software vendor or a consultancy. They read business processes for a living and they own the customer, and almost all of them have a technical side they were never given room to use: the configuration screen ended exactly where the interesting part started, and everything past it went to a development team on another continent.

What changed is the platform. The agents are built there, changed there and run there, so the person who designs the workflow is the person who builds it, in front of the customer, in the same week. You write the prompts and you wire up their systems, and when a number moves you go and change whatever produced it. AI coding assistants work alongside you, so a change that used to take a sprint becomes a prompt and a test.

The half of the job you were already good at stays. Discovery, a room full of stakeholders, an account that trusts you: here that is what keeps the building honest, because you are the one who heard what they actually meant. What you gain is the other half. You spend your days on agent design, evals and prompt engineering, inside a company that runs its own operations on agents, which is a faster education in this than anything you could sign up for.

Why this role is different

It is not pure delivery and it is not pure engineering. You sit at the intersection: you understand the retailer’s catalog workflow well enough to redesign it around agents, and you have the depth to build the agent flows yourself.

You cover the whole lifecycle. The preparation, mapping their processes, designing the workflow, writing and iterating the prompts, defining the KPIs. Then the run, deployment, integration with their systems, monitoring, debugging, and optimization against those KPIs.

And you do not only deliver. You shape how we deliver and you grow the engineers around you, so one senior hire lifts the team instead of adding a pair of hands. You work closely with the Agent Product Managers, who own the product direction, and with the AI Engineers on delivery.

What you would do

  • Lead agent implementations end to end for enterprise retailers, from kickoff to production, on our DIPE method: design, implement, prove, evolve.
  • Own our most strategic accounts and the heaviest proofs of concept directly.
  • Define the success KPIs with the customer, and build the measurement loop that proves the agents are working.
  • Design and build the agent workflows, and write the prompt layer that drives them.
  • Integrate agents with customer systems: PIM, ERP, ecommerce platforms, marketplaces, data warehouses.
  • Own the run. Monitor, debug, iterate on prompts and flows, and move the numbers over time.
  • Structure how we deliver, and grow the engineers around you, so the team scales on method instead of drowning.
  • Feed what you learn back into the product and the agent roadmap.

What we are looking for

Essential

  • Three or more years of experience, most of it in consulting or solution delivery. Many of our best fits are management engineers who read a business process and enjoy working with data.
  • You sit between business and technology. You can redesign a retailer’s catalog workflow and build the agent flow yourself. Not a pure PM, not a pure data engineer.
  • Hands-on with workflow builders such as n8n, and with AI-native coding tools such as Claude Code or Codex.
  • Comfortable coding with AI assistance, in Python or TypeScript, to glue systems together and extend what an agent does.
  • Prompt engineering sense. You iterate against real data, you measure output quality, and you know when to fix something with a prompt and when to fix it with code.
  • Standing with enterprise customers, and a record of bringing complex delivery home.
  • You have managed projects and people, and you still want to build rather than only coordinate.
  • Customer-facing and high agency. You handle ambiguity, you lead the conversation with the retailer, and you do not wait for a perfect brief.
  • English to native standard, and you are at home in the UK market. Italian is a plus.

Preferred

  • You have worked with a workflow orchestration engine.
  • Deep retail workflow knowledge: catalog management, PIM, assortment, attribute governance, channel publishing, marketplace operations.
  • The major PIM platforms, Akeneo, Salsify, inRiver, Pimcore, and the feed and channel managers.
  • A background as Forward Deployed Engineer, Solutions Engineer, Implementation Lead or technical CSM at an enterprise software company.
  • Retail data quality at scale: millions of SKUs, many languages, many marketplaces.

The team you would join

Our founders have spent their careers building and operating retail at scale. They have founded retail companies generating tens of millions in revenue, launched and scaled Amazon’s operations in Italy and Spain, led operations at Everli across more than 2,000 employees, and shaped product direction at Shopify and Zalando. Operator, founder, product leader. Every seat that defined modern European commerce.

What we offer

  • Ownership. Your work reaches production and customers fast, and shapes the delivery method directly.
  • Growth. A high-leverage team, real commercial complexity, tight feedback loops.
  • An ambitious roadmap. Help define the operating infrastructure for agentic commerce in Europe.
  • A new craft. You learn to build and ship with agents and AI coding assistants, and it compounds.
  • Flexible hybrid. The London hub, three days a week minimum, plus four remote weeks a year.
